What is a radiofrequency fibroid ablation device used for?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the uterus. During ablation, imaging helps the clinician guide a probe to the fibroid. Radiofrequency energy heats targeted tissue, which then shrinks or becomes less active over time. The approach is designed to address fibroid-related symptoms while limiting treatment to selected areas.

Suitability depends on the fibroid’s size, number, position and symptoms, as well as pregnancy plans and other health factors. It is not the same as removing a fibroid. Myomectomy removes fibroids surgically, and the alternatives have different recovery, fertility and recurrence considerations.

Ask how the fibroid was mapped, what symptoms the procedure is expected to address and whether tissue will be removed or left to shrink. Discuss fertility plans, contraception, anaesthesia and recovery restrictions. After treatment, follow instructions about pain relief, activity and follow-up imaging. Keep the discharge information available in case symptoms change.

Contact the treating team urgently for heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, worsening pelvic pain, fainting, foul-smelling discharge or difficulty passing urine after the procedure. Seek emergency help for severe pain with collapse or breathing difficulty. Before treatment, prompt review is needed for rapidly worsening bleeding, severe fatigue or new pelvic pain.
