These medicines contain platinum and can attach to DNA inside a cell. The resulting damage can stop a cancer cell from copying itself or trigger its death. They may be part of treatment for cancers such as those affecting the lung, ovary, bladder, bowel, head and neck, or testicle, depending on the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Common platinum medicines include cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin. The choice depends on the cancer, other health conditions, kidney function, previous treatments, and the intended treatment goal.

Before treatment, give your oncology team a complete medicine list and mention hearing problems, numbness or tingling, kidney or heart conditions, and any previous chemotherapy reactions. Blood tests may be used to check whether your body is ready for the next dose.

Call your oncology team urgently for a fever, chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled vomiting, very little urine, or unusual bleeding. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, or collapse. Report new ringing in the ears, hearing change, or worsening numbness promptly.
