What is platelet-rich plasma used for?

A clinician takes a sample of your blood and processes it to concentrate platelets in part of the plasma. The resulting preparation is then placed in the chosen treatment area, such as the scalp, facial skin, or a joint or tendon region. Platelets release signalling proteins involved in the body’s repair response, but the concentration and preparation method vary between clinics. PRP is not a single treatment: the goal, injection or application technique, and medical evidence differ by body area.

First clarify the goal: hair density, skin appearance, or a musculoskeletal problem. Tell the clinician about anaemia, bleeding or clotting conditions, infection near the treatment area, immune conditions, and medicines that affect bleeding. Ask how the sample will be handled, what discomfort and bruising are expected, and whether another treatment may suit the same concern. Follow the clinic’s instructions about washing the area, medicines, activity, and follow-up.

After an injection, seek prompt advice for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or pain that is becoming stronger. For a scalp or facial procedure, urgent assessment is needed for rapidly worsening swelling, breathing difficulty, or changes in vision. New weakness, numbness, or severe pain after a musculoskeletal injection also warrants urgent medical review.
