What Is a PET-CT Scan Done With?

FDG is a glucose-like substance carrying a small amount of radioactive material. After it is given, areas that use more glucose may collect more tracer. The PET part detects this activity, while the CT part creates detailed pictures showing the location and shape of organs and tissues.

The tracer is commonly given through a vein. You may then rest quietly before imaging so normal activity and movement do not affect the pictures. The scan itself is performed while you lie still on a table that moves through the scanner.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and physical activity. Tell the team if you have diabetes, could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have difficulty lying flat, or have previously reacted to contrast material. Wear comfortable clothing and remove metal items when asked.

Bring information about your medicines and relevant test results. Plan to remain still during image collection and allow time for preparation, tracer uptake, and scanning.

Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread rash, or severe dizziness after the injection. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty or collapse. Mild soreness at an injection site can occur, but worsening pain or swelling should be reported.

Ask which tracer will be used, whether CT contrast is planned, how to manage your usual medicines, and when you can eat or resume normal activity. You can also ask what the scan is intended to clarify and when the report will be discussed.
