What is a pedicle screw used for?

The screw passes through the strong part of a vertebra called the pedicle. A surgeon connects it to a rod, creating a framework that helps hold selected spinal bones in a planned position. This support can protect alignment while bone grows across a fusion area. Pedicle screws may be used for instability, a fracture, deformity such as scoliosis, or other conditions requiring a stabilising construct. They do not repair every source of back pain, and the number and position of screws depend on the spine level and surgical aim.

Ask which vertebrae will be included and whether the screws are intended to remain in place. After surgery, follow the movement, wound-care, and rehabilitation instructions provided by your team. Report increasing wound drainage, fever, new weakness, or a change in bladder or bowel control promptly. A follow-up examination and imaging may be used to check alignment and healing.
