Short answer

Oral rehydration salts are used to replace water and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea, vomiting, sweating or another cause of dehydration.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How rehydration works

The sachet contains salts and glucose that help the intestine absorb fluid. This replaces water and important electrolytes more effectively than plain water alone when fluid loss is significant. Oral rehydration solution does not treat the underlying cause of diarrhoea or vomiting.

It is suitable for many people with mild or moderate dehydration, but infants, older adults and people with serious medical conditions can become unwell quickly. A clinician may recommend a supervised oral rehydration therapy plan when symptoms are substantial.

Preparing and drinking the solution

Dissolve the entire sachet in the exact volume of safe water stated on the packet. Do not make it stronger or weaker, and do not add sugar, juice or salt. Stir until dissolved and use it within the time advised on the label.

Give frequent small sips, especially after vomiting. If a person vomits, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips. Continue feeding or breastfeeding when possible, and avoid alcohol. Ask a pharmacist about storage and disposal of leftover solution.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, extreme drowsiness, very little or no urine, cold or mottled skin, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain or inability to keep fluids down. A child with repeated diarrhoea or vomiting needs prompt assessment if drinking poorly or becoming unusually sleepy.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much solution to offer, how to adjust feeding, whether your medicines or kidney condition affect its use, and what signs mean that you need medical assessment.

What if I vomit after drinking it?

Pause briefly, then try smaller, frequent sips. Seek care if vomiting continues or you cannot keep fluids down.
