What is an mRNA vaccine used for?

The vaccine contains messenger RNA, a temporary set of instructions that helps some of your cells make a harmless piece of a germ. Your immune system notices that piece and practises making a response. The messenger RNA is then broken down; it does not become part of your genetic material.

This approach can be used in preventive vaccination programmes, including vaccination against COVID-19. It is designed to reduce the chance of serious illness, although protection can vary with the vaccine, the infection and your health.

Tell the vaccinator about a previous serious allergic reaction to a vaccine or an ingredient, current illness, pregnancy, immune conditions and medicines that affect your immune system. Bring your vaccination record if you have it.

After the injection, stay for the observation period recommended at the vaccination centre. A sore arm, tiredness, headache or fever can occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids and use only a symptom medicine that a clinician or pharmacist says is suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, chest pain or a fast or irregular heartbeat after vaccination. Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, worsening or do not settle as expected.
