What is mammogram done with?

During the examination, the breast rests on a platform and is gently compressed between plates while the machine takes images from different angles. Compression helps keep the breast still and spreads tissue so the images can be interpreted. Digital mammography records the images electronically. Three-dimensional mammography, also called breast tomosynthesis, takes multiple low-dose views that a computer combines into thin image slices. The radiographer selects the approach available and appropriate for the appointment.

Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up and avoid deodorant, powder, or cream on the breasts and underarms on the day, because some products can appear on an image. Tell the radiographer if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have a new breast symptom. Mention prior breast images so they can be compared when available. Compression can feel uncomfortable, but tell the radiographer if it is too painful.

A mammogram is an imaging test, not a diagnosis by itself. Arrange prompt clinical assessment for a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, persistent one-sided breast change, or redness and swelling. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening breast swelling with fever or feeling very unwell. Do not wait for routine screening if a symptom has appeared.

Ask which mammography method is planned, whether earlier images should be brought, how your implants or pregnancy status affect imaging, and when and how results will be explained. Ask what follow-up is advised if the report needs additional views or another test.
