What is letrozole used for?

Letrozole blocks an enzyme involved in making oestrogen. In fertility care, this change can prompt the ovaries to develop and release an egg when ovulation is irregular or absent. It may be used as part of a monitored ovulation-induction plan. In cancer care, reducing oestrogen can help manage some breast cancers that respond to this hormone, usually after a specialist has assessed the tumour and treatment history. The dose and timing depend on the reason for treatment.

Take letrozole exactly as prescribed and do not change the schedule without contacting your clinician. In fertility treatment, attend the scans or tests arranged to check ovarian response and timing. Tell your team about other medicines, liver problems, bone health concerns and any chance of pregnancy. Possible effects include hot flushes, headache, tiredness, dizziness, joint discomfort or changes in bleeding. Keep a record of symptoms so the prescriber can decide whether the plan needs adjusting.

Get urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, one-sided leg swelling, severe allergic symptoms or a new neurological problem. During fertility treatment, severe pelvic pain, marked abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting or reduced urine needs prompt assessment. Contact your prescriber about troublesome mood changes, persistent pain or unexpected bleeding.
