What is an IPL photofacial done with?

A clinician cleans the skin, applies protective measures and often a cooling gel, then places the IPL handpiece against the treatment area. Each pulse delivers a brief burst of filtered light. Pigment and blood vessels absorb parts of that light, creating heat in the selected target while the surface is protected as much as possible. You may feel a warm snap or brief stinging sensation.

The treatment is commonly chosen for visible sun-related pigment, some facial redness, uneven tone, and selected signs of photodamage. An IPL photofacial is cosmetic light treatment, not a method for diagnosing or removing a suspicious mole.

Tell the clinic about recent sun exposure, tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, cold sores, active rashes, and products that have irritated your skin. Follow instructions about shaving, stopping selected products, and arriving without makeup. After treatment, use gentle skincare and diligent sun protection, and leave any temporary darkening or flaking to resolve without picking. The clinician can explain whether a series is appropriate for your concern.

Report blistering, severe or increasing pain, extensive swelling, crusting, or signs of infection to the provider. Seek urgent care for an eye injury, facial swelling, or trouble breathing. Have any changing, bleeding, or non-healing pigmented lesion assessed before cosmetic light treatment.

Ask which skin concern is being targeted, whether IPL fits your skin tone and current sun exposure, what eye protection and aftercare are needed, and how long redness or pigment darkening may last. Ask how the plan changes if your skin becomes irritated.
