What is a hysteroscope used for?

A hysteroscope is a narrow tube with a light and camera. It passes through the vagina and cervix, so the clinician can inspect the uterine cavity on a screen. Fluid may be introduced to gently open the cavity and improve the view.

It can help investigate unusual bleeding, infertility concerns, repeated pregnancy loss, or a suspected polyp or fibroid. Depending on the findings, the same procedure may allow a clinician to take a sample or treat a problem without an abdominal incision.

Your clinician will explain whether the procedure is diagnostic or operative, what pain relief or anaesthesia is planned, and whether you need to avoid food or drink beforehand. Tell them about pregnancy possibility, medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and previous reactions to anaesthesia.

Plan for mild cramping or light bleeding afterwards and follow the instructions about bathing, intercourse, tampons, and activity. The exact recovery advice depends on what was done.

Seek medical advice after hysteroscopy for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, chills, faintness, repeated vomiting, or discharge with an unpleasant smell. Sudden severe pain or feeling very unwell needs urgent assessment.

Ask what the hysteroscope is expected to look for, whether a tissue sample or treatment might happen during the visit, how results will be shared, and which symptoms should prompt a call.
