What is hormone therapy for cancer done with?

Some cancers use hormones as growth signals. Endocrine treatment can stop a hormone from attaching to its receptor, lower the amount of a hormone made by the body, or interfere with hormone production. Tamoxifen is one medicine that blocks oestrogen signalling in relevant breast cancer cells.

The treatment may be used after an operation to lower the chance of the cancer returning, before another treatment, or for cancer that has spread. The choice depends on the tumour’s hormone receptors, cancer stage, menopausal status where relevant, previous treatment, and other health conditions.

Ask which hormone receptor result supports treatment and how long the plan is expected to continue. Tell the team about blood-clot history, stroke, liver problems, abnormal bleeding, pregnancy plans, and medicines that may interact. Take tablets exactly as prescribed and discuss troublesome effects before stopping. Keep scheduled reviews so the team can assess symptoms, examinations, and any monitoring needed for the selected medicine.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe headache. Contact the oncology team promptly for unexpected vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin, severe mood changes, or symptoms that interfere with daily activities. These signs have different possible causes and need appropriate assessment.
