What is a hormonal IUD device used for?

A clinician places the small device inside the uterus. It releases levonorgestrel, a progestogen, close to the womb lining. The hormone thickens cervical mucus and makes the lining thinner, reducing the chance that sperm will reach an egg and making menstrual flow lighter for many users. Its effect is local, though some hormone enters the bloodstream.

It is reversible: fertility generally returns after removal, but suitability depends on your health, symptoms, and reproductive plans. It does not prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Before fitting, discuss pregnancy risk, bleeding patterns, pelvic infections, uterine conditions, and medicines with the clinician. Ask when contraceptive protection starts and whether you need backup protection. Cramping and spotting are common during adjustment, so plan the recommended follow-up and use only pain relief that is suitable for you.

Check the threads only as instructed. A change in their length, inability to feel them, or feeling plastic at the cervix should be reported rather than corrected at home.

Contact a clinician promptly for worsening pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, heavy bleeding, or pain during sex after insertion. Urgent assessment is needed for collapse, severe sudden pain, or a positive pregnancy test with abdominal pain or bleeding.
