What is a hormonal coil done with?

The device is a flexible plastic frame placed inside the uterus by a trained clinician. It contains levonorgestrel, a progestogen, and releases it gradually near the womb lining. This thickens cervical mucus, changes the lining, and can interfere with sperm movement. The device has fine threads extending into the vagina so its position can be checked.

A hormonal coil may make periods lighter or less predictable, particularly during the first months. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Tell the clinician about your medical history, current medicines, pregnancy possibility, unusual bleeding, or recent pelvic infection before fitting. After insertion, follow the advice about checking the threads and arranging a review. Cramping and light bleeding may happen for a short time; suitable pain relief can be discussed.

Do not pull the threads. If you cannot feel them, feel a hard part of the device, or think it has shifted, use another contraceptive method and contact the clinic for advice.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or persistent pelvic pain, fever, unusual-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, or pain during sex after fitting. Get urgent help for sudden severe pain, fainting, or suspected pregnancy with one-sided pain, because the device position and pregnancy location may need checking.
