What is genetic carrier screening done with?

The laboratory extracts genetic material from the sample and examines genes linked with inherited conditions included in the chosen panel. Next-generation sequencing can read many gene regions in one laboratory process, although the exact panel and laboratory method vary.

A carrier often has no symptoms but may pass a variant to a child. A screening result is not the same as a diagnosis in the person tested, and a result that finds no listed variant cannot remove every inherited risk.

Ask which conditions and genes are included, whether testing one or both partners is advised, and how results will affect pregnancy planning. Provide relevant family history and consider genetic counselling when the result is positive, unclear or difficult to interpret.

Keep the laboratory report and share it with future maternity or fertility teams. A partner may be offered testing when one person carries a variant associated with a recessive condition.

Arrange a results discussion if a report identifies carrier status, a possible variant or a finding that needs confirmation. Seek urgent medical care for symptoms after the sample collection such as uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, severe swelling or fainting.

Ask what the result can and cannot show, whether confirmation is needed, whether a partner or relative should test, and which reproductive choices or counselling services are available.
