What Is Gait Analysis Done With?

Three-dimensional motion capture uses cameras and body markers to track joint movement, stride timing, and limb coordination. A pressure-plate gait scanner records how the feet load and leave the ground as you walk or run. The clinician combines these findings with footwear, symptoms, strength, flexibility, and a physical examination. The result can show patterns that are difficult to judge from a brief visual check alone.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the legs to move and bring the shoes you normally use for the activity being assessed. Tell the clinician whether your symptoms occur during walking, running, stairs, or a particular distance. You may be asked to walk naturally and repeat the task at a chosen speed. The assessment is most useful when you do not deliberately change your usual movement.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden inability to walk, a new deformity, severe swelling, marked weakness, numbness, or a foot that becomes cold or changes colour. Gait analysis is not a substitute for urgent assessment after a significant injury or when neurological symptoms appear.
