What is the etonogestrel implant rod used for?

The rod is inserted beneath the skin of the upper arm by a trained clinician. It releases a steady amount of the progestogen etonogestrel. This mainly prevents ovulation and also thickens cervical mucus, making sperm movement more difficult. It is designed to provide ongoing contraception without a daily tablet. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, and bleeding patterns may change after insertion.

Tell the clinician if you might be pregnant, take regular medicines, or have a history of liver disease or unexplained bleeding. Keep the insertion dressing in place as advised and check the area for increasing redness, swelling or discharge. Ask when the implant becomes effective and use a backup method until then if advised. The rod can be removed by a trained clinician whenever you want to stop or change contraception.

Seek medical advice if the rod cannot be felt, appears to be moving, or the insertion site becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen or wet. Arrange assessment for very heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, jaundice, or a positive pregnancy test. Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or one-sided leg swelling and pain.
