What Is Endoscopic Spine Surgery Done With?

A spinal endoscope is a narrow tube containing a camera and light. It sends a close view of the area to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to work through a limited opening. Instruments passed beside or through the endoscope can remove a disc fragment, relieve pressure around a nerve, or treat other selected causes of pain, depending on the spinal level and diagnosis.

The approach may be through the back or side, and the access route is planned around the nerves, bones, and tissues involved. Endoscopic surgery is not appropriate for every spinal condition. Examination and imaging help determine whether the target can be reached safely and whether another operation would be more suitable.

Tell the surgical team about medicines, allergies, previous spine procedures, and any new weakness or bladder or bowel changes. Follow instructions about fasting and transport. After surgery, walk and perform exercises only within the advised limits. Keep the wound clean, avoid strenuous bending or lifting until cleared, and attend follow-up so nerve symptoms and recovery can be reviewed.

Report increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a severe headache after the procedure. Seek emergency care for new or worsening leg weakness, numbness around the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask what structure is causing the symptoms, how the endoscope will reach it, whether a disc or bone fragment will be removed, what activity limits apply, and which symptoms require urgent contact.
