What Is EMG Biofeedback Used For?

Short answer
EMG biofeedback is used to show muscle activity during exercise so you can improve control, timing, activation, or relaxation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the feedback helps
A therapist places small surface sensors on the skin over selected muscles. The sensors detect electrical activity and display it as a moving line, sound, or visual signal. You then try a specific task, such as tightening a weak muscle, releasing an overactive muscle, or coordinating several muscles. The feedback makes an otherwise hidden response easier to notice.
EMG biofeedback does not send electricity into the muscle and does not replace the examination. It is a coaching tool used alongside movement practice. The therapist adjusts the task as your control improves and may connect the exercise to walking, reaching, balance, or joint movement.
Making a session useful
Wear clothing that allows access to the treatment area and tell the therapist about skin irritation, implanted devices, or pain during movement. Focus on the target muscle rather than forceful effort. Practise the exercise at home only as instructed, because compensating with nearby muscles can make the display misleading. Progress is judged by movement quality and function, not by chasing a particular screen signal.
When to seek care
Tell your therapist if the sensors cause a rash, the exercise increases pain, or you feel dizzy or unusually weak. Seek medical assessment for new loss of strength, spreading numbness, or a sudden change in coordination rather than trying to correct it with biofeedback alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which muscle or movement is being retrained, what signal change the therapist wants to see, how home exercises should feel, and how improvement will be measured in daily activities.

Questions people ask
Does EMG biofeedback make the muscle contract?
No. The sensors detect activity and display it; you create the contraction or relaxation yourself.
Is EMG biofeedback only for weak muscles?
No. It can also help with relaxing overactive muscles and improving the timing or coordination of movement.
