What is emergency contraception done with?

Short answer

Emergency contraception is commonly done with levonorgestrel, a hormone medicine taken as soon as possible after contraceptive failure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it works

Levonorgestrel is a progestogen used to delay or prevent ovulation. It is intended for occasional emergency use after sex without contraception or when a method may have failed. It does not end an established pregnancy and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. The medicine may be less suitable in some situations, including certain medicine interactions, so a pharmacist or clinician should check your circumstances.

Taking emergency contraception

Take levonorgestrel promptly according to the product instructions or advice from a pharmacist. Tell the pharmacist when the unprotected sex occurred, whether you have vomited, which medicines you take, and whether you are breastfeeding or could already be pregnant. If vomiting occurs soon after the dose, ask promptly whether another dose is needed. Use condoms or another reliable method until ongoing contraception is effective.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent care for severe lower-abdominal pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding, particularly if your period is late or a pregnancy test is positive. Arrange medical advice if your next period is unusually late, much lighter than expected, or you develop persistent pain. Emergency contraception does not prevent an ectopic pregnancy, so concerning pain needs assessment.

Questions to ask

Ask whether levonorgestrel is suitable with your medicines, when to test for pregnancy, when regular contraception will work, and what to do if you vomit after taking it.
