What Is a Diode Laser Used For?

The device emits a selected wavelength of light that is absorbed more strongly by pigment in the hair than by nearby skin. Heat travels along the hair toward the follicle and can reduce its ability to produce a new hair. Because hairs grow through different phases, a course of appointments is usually needed to address follicles as they enter a responsive phase. Results vary with hair colour, skin tone, body area, hormonal factors and the device settings. It is not the same as shaving, which cuts hair at the skin surface.

During the consultation, disclose recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, active skin irritation and any tendency to form raised scars. Avoid plucking or waxing for the interval advised by the clinic because the follicle needs to be present for the laser to target it. Shaving may be recommended before treatment. Follow the aftercare plan, protect treated skin from strong sun and do not scratch temporary redness or swelling.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness is worsening instead of settling, or if blisters, marked colour change or crusting develops. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or widespread blistering. A clinician should review persistent symptoms before another session is scheduled.
