What is diagnostic hysteroscopy done with?

A hysteroscope is a narrow tube with a camera and light at its tip. The clinician uses it to see the uterine lining on a monitor rather than making an abdominal cut. Fluid may be gently introduced to open the uterine cavity and improve the view. The instrument can help examine possible causes of unusual bleeding, polyps, fibroids, or difficulty conceiving. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is mainly an inspection; some clinics can pass small instruments through the scope if a sample or minor treatment is needed.

Your clinic may give instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and the timing of the procedure in relation to your menstrual cycle. Tell the team if pregnancy is possible, if you take blood-thinning medicine, or if you have an infection or allergy. Arrange practical support if sedation is planned, and ask when normal activity, bathing, and sexual activity can resume.

Mild cramping or light spotting can occur afterward. Contact your care team promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, fainting, or trouble breathing. Seek urgent help for severe pain, collapse, or bleeding that makes you feel weak.

Ask whether the hysteroscopy will use local anaesthetic, sedation, or another form of pain relief; whether a biopsy or removal of a finding may happen during the same visit; and when you should expect the result.
