What is a DEXA scanner used for?

During a DEXA scan, you lie on a scanning table while an arm passes over areas such as the hip and spine. The equipment compares how much X-ray energy passes through bone and soft tissue, producing measurements that help a clinician identify reduced bone density.

The result supports assessment of osteoporosis and fracture risk. It is one part of the clinical picture; age, previous fractures, medicines, family history, mobility, and other health conditions may also influence decisions.

Wear clothing without metal when possible and tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie comfortably. Follow the centre's instructions about supplements and food. The scan itself is generally brief, and you remain awake throughout.
