What Is Curettage and Cautery Done With?

Curettage uses a small, firm instrument called a curette to scrape selected tissue from the skin. Cautery then uses an electrosurgical unit to apply controlled heat or electrical energy to the surface. This can help control bleeding and treat residual tissue in the area. The clinician selects the technique, depth and number of passes according to the lesion, its site and the clinical assessment.

The procedure may be used for selected superficial skin lesions. It is not appropriate for every growth, so a changing, bleeding or uncertain lesion needs assessment before removal. Local anaesthetic may be used to reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Tell the clinician about pacemakers or implanted electrical devices, bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting, allergies, diabetes, immune conditions and previous problems with wound healing. Afterward, follow the dressing instructions and keep the area clean. Mild soreness, redness, oozing or a scab can occur. Do not scratch or pull the scab, and protect the healing site from friction and strong sun exposure.

Contact the clinic if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, pain is escalating, redness spreads, swelling becomes marked, or drainage develops. Fever or a wound that smells unpleasant may indicate infection and needs review. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or fainting. A lesion that returns or does not heal should be reassessed.

Ask why curettage and cautery is suitable, whether tissue will be sent for examination, how the electrosurgical unit will be used, and what kind of mark may remain. Clarify dressing changes, bathing, exercise, sun protection, follow-up and the signs of infection or bleeding that require a call.
