What is breast tomosynthesis used for?

The breast is imaged from several angles, and a computer combines the views into thin image slices. This can make overlapping tissue easier to assess than a single flat view. A clinician may use it for breast screening, to examine a lump or other change, or to clarify an area seen on another image. The test does not by itself prove that a finding is cancer; further assessment may include additional imaging or a biopsy.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions and tell the team if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or have breast implants. Avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the chest and underarm area if requested, because these can affect the images. During the test, each breast is briefly positioned and compressed while images are taken. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up, and ask when and how the result will be shared.

Arrange medical assessment for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, nipple pulling inward, skin dimpling, or a change that persists. These findings can have several causes, but they should not be diagnosed from symptoms alone. After imaging, promptly report increasing pain, marked swelling, fever, or redness, especially if a procedure was also performed.

Ask why tomosynthesis is recommended, whether it will be combined with a standard mammogram, and what happens if the images show an area needing clarification. You can also ask when to expect the report and whether any previous breast images should be provided for comparison.
