What Is Bone Cement Used For?

Bone cement is a material placed between an implant and prepared bone in some hip or knee replacements. It hardens in the space and helps hold the component in position. Other joint replacements use a different fixation method, so the choice depends on the implant, bone quality, joint, and surgeon’s plan.

In kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty, cement can be delivered into a fractured vertebra to support the weakened bone and may help reduce pain related to movement. These procedures are not suitable for every spinal fracture, and imaging and examination guide the decision.

Ask which material and fixation method are planned, where the cement will be placed, and how the choice relates to your bone strength and procedure. Share your medicines, allergies, previous operations, infection history, and any new fever or skin infection with the surgical team.

After treatment, follow the movement, wound, lifting, and rehabilitation instructions you receive. Keep scheduled reviews so the team can assess pain, mobility, the wound, and the position of an implant or treated vertebra.

Contact your surgical team for worsening pain, fever, increasing redness or drainage from an incision, or new difficulty using the treated limb. After a spine procedure, urgent assessment is needed for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty, or chest pain.
