What is blastocyst culture done with?

After fertilisation in an IVF laboratory, embryos are placed in small dishes or wells containing culture fluid that supplies conditions needed for early development. The laboratory maintains controlled temperature, gas balance, and sterility while embryologists observe how embryos change. The aim is to allow suitable embryos to develop to the blastocyst stage, when they have organised into an inner cell group and an outer layer. Some laboratories use Time-Lapse Embryo Imaging to record development inside an incubator without repeated removal.

Ask your fertility team whether blastocyst culture is recommended for your cycle and how embryos will be observed, stored, transferred, or discarded according to your consent. Clarify whether time-lapse imaging is available and what information it can and cannot show. Your clinic can explain the plan if only some embryos continue developing.

Blastocyst culture itself takes place in the laboratory, so it does not usually cause symptoms at home.
