What is a bioabsorbable screw used for?

The screw is placed into bone during selected orthopaedic procedures. It provides initial fixation, helping a tissue graft or small bone piece stay in the intended position while the surrounding tissues heal. Over time, the body gradually breaks down and absorbs the material. The timing and extent of this process depend on the screw material, the surgical site, and individual healing.

Bioabsorbable screws are used in some ligament reconstructions, including ACL reconstruction, but they are not suitable for every patient or every repair. The surgeon considers bone strength, graft type, fixation needs, activity goals, and available implant designs before choosing between a bioabsorbable screw and another fixation method.

Follow the surgeon's limits on weight-bearing, knee movement, bracing, and sport. Rehabilitation commonly builds control and strength gradually rather than testing the graft early. Attend follow-up appointments even when pain improves, because stability and function need assessment. Report a new catching sensation, increasing swelling, wound changes, or a sudden loss of movement instead of adjusting exercises independently.

Contact the care team for increasing warmth or redness at the wound, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new instability. Urgent care is appropriate for severe calf pain or swelling, chest pain, major breathlessness, or a foot that becomes cold or changes colour. These signs require assessment whether or not the screw is the cause.

Ask why this fixation is recommended, what material is being used, how the graft will be protected, when strength training can progress, and whether future imaging or follow-up is needed to monitor healing.
