Short answer

Anti-sickness drugs are used to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting caused by cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or other medicines.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main use
Preventing or controlling nausea and vomiting.
Safety point
Report uncontrolled vomiting because dehydration and missed medicines can cause harm.

How they help

Nausea and vomiting can happen when treatment or illness activates the body’s vomiting pathways. Anti-sickness medicines work at different points in those pathways. A clinician may choose one medicine or combine medicines according to the likely cause, the treatment being given, previous symptoms, and other medicines you use.

Some are taken before treatment to prevent symptoms; others are taken at set times or when nausea starts. They do not treat the cancer itself, and they may not remove every symptom. Constipation, sleepiness, headache, or other effects can occur with some options.

Using them effectively

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed, including any dose intended before treatment. Keep a record of when you take it, how much you drink, vomiting episodes, and whether you can keep medicines down. Small frequent sips and light meals may be easier if your team says they are suitable.

Tell your team about constipation, severe sleepiness, diabetes, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy, and all medicines or supplements. Do not add an over-the-counter remedy without checking for interactions.

When to seek urgent care

Call your treatment team promptly if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids or essential medicines down, your urine becomes very dark or infrequent, you feel faint, or nausea is not controlled. Seek urgent help for blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, confusion, or difficulty breathing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask when to take each medicine, whether it is preventive or for breakthrough symptoms, what side effects to watch for, and what to do if you vomit soon after a dose.

Questions people ask

Should anti-sickness medicine be taken before chemotherapy?

Some medicines work best when taken before treatment; follow the schedule supplied by your oncology team.

What if I vomit after taking a dose?

Contact your treatment team for specific advice rather than automatically repeating the dose.
