What is anti-D injection done with?

Short answer

An anti-D injection is given with anti-D immunoglobulin, a prepared antibody that helps prevent Rh sensitisation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is in the injection

Anti-D immunoglobulin is a medicine made from donated human plasma and contains antibodies directed at the Rh-D marker on red blood cells. In an Rh-negative pregnancy, it can help remove Rh-positive cells that have entered the bloodstream before the immune system makes its own lasting antibodies. The injection is also called anti-D prophylaxis or a rhesus injection. It is different from a routine vaccine and is selected according to your blood group and clinical situation.

How to prepare

Bring your blood-group information if you have it, and tell the clinician about allergies, previous anti-D doses, bleeding, injury, or procedures. The clinician will confirm why it is being recommended and explain the injection site, timing, and observation advice. Keep the product or treatment record provided by your maternity service. When to seek care

After the injection, seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, or collapse. Contact your maternity service for persistent fever, marked weakness, or symptoms that worry you. Separately, urgent pregnancy symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or reduced fetal movement need assessment and should not be attributed automatically to the injection.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which product you will receive, why it is needed, where it will be given, and what reactions to watch for. Check whether your antibody screen changes the plan and how to report a later bleed, injury, procedure, or birth.
