What are anthracycline chemotherapy drugs used for?

Anthracyclines enter cells and interfere with processes needed for DNA to function and be copied. This can stop cancer cells from multiplying, but healthy cells that divide quickly can also be affected. The drugs may be given through a vein, often in cycles with rest between treatments, and are commonly combined with other chemotherapy medicines.

The choice depends on the cancer type, its extent, previous treatment, general health, and the intended goal. Your team selects the dose and schedule while considering previous exposure and other risks.

Tell your oncology team about heart problems, previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy, liver or kidney conditions, infections, and all medicines. Monitoring can include blood tests and checks of how your heart is functioning. Report symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Common effects can include tiredness, nausea, mouth soreness, hair loss, and lower blood counts. Your team can prescribe supportive medicines and explain infection precautions.

Contact your treatment team urgently for fever, chills, unusual bleeding, breathlessness, chest discomfort, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink. During chemotherapy, infection can become serious quickly when blood counts are low.
