What is an annual health check done with?

A clinician usually starts by asking about your symptoms, medicines, allergies, family history, sleep, diet, activity and tobacco or alcohol use. Measurements can include blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight and height. A physical examination may involve listening to your heart and lungs, checking your abdomen, looking at your skin and assessing movement or swelling when relevant.

A digital blood pressure monitor can inflate around your upper arm to record blood pressure while you sit quietly. Blood or urine tests are not automatic for every person; they are selected when your history, examination or age makes them useful. Screening may also cover areas such as blood sugar, cholesterol, vision or vaccinations.

Bring a current medicine list, previous results and details of any symptoms you have noticed. Write down questions and mention changes even if they seem minor. Ask whether you need to fast, drink water normally or avoid a medicine before any planned test. Wear clothing that makes it easy to expose an arm for blood pressure or allow a brief examination.

An annual check should not delay care for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, fainting, new confusion or heavy bleeding. Seek urgent medical help for these symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent unexplained symptom, a rapidly changing mole, a new lump or a significant change in your usual health.
