What Is Ankle Arthroscopy Done With?

An arthroscope is a narrow tube with a light and camera. It sends a magnified view of the inside of the ankle to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to inspect cartilage, the joint lining, and other structures. Additional instruments can remove loose tissue, smooth selected damaged areas, treat scar tissue, or address a problem identified during the procedure. The exact instruments depend on the reason for surgery and the findings inside the joint.

Before the procedure, ask about anaesthesia, medicines to pause or continue, fasting, and whether you will need crutches or a support. Afterward, protect the ankle according to the weight-bearing plan and keep dressings clean and dry. Elevation, prescribed pain relief, and gradual exercises can support recovery. Physiotherapy may help restore ankle movement, calf strength, balance, and walking control.

Contact the surgical team for worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, fever, increasing swelling, or toes that become numb, cold, pale, or blue. Seek urgent help for severe calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. A fall or sudden inability to bear weight should be discussed promptly.
