What Is an Allograft Tendon Used For?

An allograft comes from a human donor rather than from the person having surgery. It is processed and prepared for use according to clinical protocols, then shaped and secured in the position of a damaged soft-tissue structure. In ACL reconstruction, it can serve as the new ligament framework while the knee heals and rehabilitation begins. The surgeon chooses tissue based on the injury, anatomy, previous procedures, activity goals, and available options.

Before an operation, ask where the graft comes from, how it is prepared, how it will be fixed, and what recovery involves. Follow instructions about bathing, medicines, walking, wound care, and exercises after surgery. Rehabilitation gradually addresses swelling, joint movement, muscle control, strength, and safe return to daily activities.

After surgery, contact the clinical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, severe swelling, uncontrolled pain, new numbness, or a limb that becomes cold or changes colour. Sudden calf swelling or pain, chest pain, or breathing difficulty requires urgent assessment. A new injury or sudden loss of stability should also be reported.
