What is 3D mammography used for?

During 3D mammography, the X-ray system takes images from different angles and reconstructs them into thin layers. Viewing tissue layer by layer can help the radiologist examine areas that may overlap on a standard two-dimensional mammogram. It may be offered for routine screening or when a symptom or an earlier image needs closer assessment.

The breast is compressed briefly while images are taken. Compression can feel uncomfortable, but it helps reduce movement and supports image quality. The examination uses X-rays, so tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant.

Do not use deodorant, powder, lotion or perfume on the breasts or underarms on the day unless the imaging service gives different instructions, because some products can affect the images. Wear a two-piece outfit and bring previous breast-imaging details if requested. Tell the technologist about breast implants, breast symptoms, pregnancy possibility, or difficulty standing.

After the images are reviewed, you may be asked for extra views or an ultrasound. An additional view does not by itself establish a diagnosis; it means the area needs more information.

Arrange clinical assessment for a new breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, a nipple that turns inward newly, or a persistent change in breast shape. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, or sudden heavy bleeding. Do not wait for a routine imaging appointment if a clinician has advised earlier review.
