What if a weight management programme does not relieve snoring?

Short answer
If a weight management programme does not relieve snoring, ask a clinician to assess your airway, sleep symptoms and possible obstructive sleep apnoea.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Listen for
- Breathing pauses, gasping or choking during sleep.
- Tonight
- Try side sleeping and avoid alcohol close to bedtime.
Why snoring can persist
Weight is one possible contributor to snoring, but nasal blockage, sleeping position, alcohol, smoking, enlarged tissues, jaw or airway shape and sleep apnoea can also narrow the upper airway. Ask a bed partner whether they notice pauses, choking or gasping. Waking with headaches, dry mouth or unrefreshing sleep, and daytime sleepiness, make a sleep-focused assessment more relevant. A clinician may examine your nose and throat and arrange sleep testing when appropriate.
Useful next steps
Tell the programme team that snoring continues and note whether it is worse on your back, after alcohol or during nasal congestion. Try side sleeping, keep the nose clear if congestion is present, and avoid alcohol close to bedtime. Do not use sedatives or unverified anti-snoring products without advice. If prescribed a breathing device, use it as directed and report problems with fit or comfort. When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical review for witnessed breathing pauses, choking during sleep, marked daytime sleepiness or morning headaches. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue lips, chest pain, fainting or sudden confusion. Avoid driving if sleepiness makes you struggle to stay alert.
Questions for your doctor
Could I have obstructive sleep apnoea? Would a sleep study help? Are nasal or positional treatments suitable? What should I do if daytime sleepiness affects driving or work?

Questions people ask
Does persistent snoring mean the programme is ineffective?
No. Snoring can arise from airway, nasal or sleep-related factors that weight management alone may not address.
Why does sleep apnoea matter?
Repeated airway blockage can fragment sleep and lower daytime alertness, so assessment can guide appropriate treatment.
