What if uterine artery embolisation does not relieve heavy periods?

The result can depend on what is causing the bleeding, which blood vessels were treated, and whether other uterine conditions are present. Fibroids may remain, recur, or be accompanied by adenomyosis, polyps, hormonal changes, or another source of bleeding. The recovery pattern also matters, and improvement may not be immediate. Persistent or returning heavy periods should be assessed rather than treated as a routine part of recovery.

Contact the interventional radiology or gynaecology team that performed the procedure. Record bleeding dates, flooding, clots, pain, fever, discharge, dizziness, and whether symptoms improved before returning. Bring your discharge information and medicine list. The team may consider an examination, blood tests, ultrasound or other imaging, and options such as medicine or another procedure, depending on the findings and your pregnancy plans.

Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding with faintness, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, a swollen painful leg, chest pain, or breathlessness. Emergency help is needed for collapse or severe breathing difficulty. After embolisation, new symptoms should be discussed promptly because infection, bleeding, or another complication may require treatment.
