What if vulval steroid treatment does not relieve vaginal itching?

Steroid treatment can calm inflammation on vulval skin, but itching may have another cause or involve more than one problem. Irritation from soaps, wipes, pads, fragrances, or tight clothing can persist. Thrush, another infection, eczema, psoriasis, or a skin condition requiring a different plan may also be considered. It is also possible that medicine is being applied to the wrong area or not at the prescribed frequency. Avoid assuming that stronger or more frequent application will solve the problem.

Arrange a review with a doctor or sexual health clinician. Take the product or a photo of its label and explain where, how often, and for how long you apply it. Until reviewed, wash gently with water or a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and avoid douching and scented products. Do not start antifungal or other treatment repeatedly without advice, because this can irritate the skin and obscure the examination.

Seek prompt care for sores, blisters, bleeding, marked swelling, pus, fever, pain when passing urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or another sign of a serious allergic reaction after applying a product. Persistent itching without these warning signs still merits a planned review, especially if it is disturbing sleep or causing broken skin.
