What if osteopathy does not relieve neck pain?

Neck pain can involve muscles, joints, discs, nerves, the shoulder region, or referred pain. Hands-on treatment may not match the main driver, and sustained screen use, sleep position, stress, or a recent strain can keep symptoms active. Pain after treatment does not automatically show damage, but a pattern that persists or changes should be examined.

Track whether pain spreads into an arm, and note pins and needles, numbness, weakness, headaches, dizziness, or movement limits. Use comfortable posture changes and gentle range-of-motion only if they do not increase symptoms. Avoid forceful neck manipulation until a clinician has reviewed the situation. The assessment may include neck and shoulder movement, nerve checks, and advice on exercises or work setup.

Seek emergency help after a significant injury if severe neck pain is accompanied by weakness, numbness, or trouble walking. Seek urgent care for new arm or leg weakness, loss of coordination, severe headache unlike usual, fainting, fever with a stiff neck, or difficulty speaking or swallowing.

Could the pain involve a nerve, shoulder, or another source? Are my strength, sensation, and reflexes normal? Which neck movements are appropriate now, and which warning signs require urgent help?
