What if nebuliser treatment does not relieve wheezing?

A nebuliser delivers medicine as a mist, but ongoing wheezing can mean the airways remain narrowed, the treatment was not delivered effectively, or another problem is affecting breathing. The prescribed medicine may not match the cause. A clinician can listen to your chest, check your breathing and oxygen level, and decide whether another treatment or investigation is needed.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and keep away from smoke or other known triggers. Use your reliever medicine only according to the written plan or a clinician’s instructions. Do not borrow inhalers, add medicines to the nebuliser, or delay assessment to try home remedies. If possible, take the nebuliser medicine container and your medication list with you.

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Urgent assessment is also needed when wheezing persists after treatment, especially in a child, older adult, or person with asthma or heart or lung disease.

Ask what may be causing the persistent wheeze, whether the nebuliser technique and medicine are suitable, what warning signs require emergency help, and which written action plan to follow if symptoms return.
