What if IV fluid therapy does not relieve dizziness?

Dizziness may feel like light-headedness, unsteadiness or a spinning sensation. IV fluids can support someone whose symptoms are linked to fluid loss, but they do not correct every cause. Blood pressure changes, an inner-ear balance problem, low blood sugar, anaemia, medication effects, an abnormal heart rhythm or a neurological condition may need separate evaluation. The exact sensation, its timing and what triggers it help guide the assessment.

Sit or lie down when dizziness starts and rise slowly. Avoid driving, climbing or operating machinery until you know how the symptom affects you. Arrange medical review, especially if episodes recur. Note whether symptoms follow standing, head movement, meals or a new medicine, and record associated nausea, hearing changes, palpitations, headache or weakness. Keep drinking normally unless a clinician has restricted fluids; do not arrange repeated IV treatment without identifying the reason for the dizziness.

Seek emergency care for fainting, chest pain, severe headache, trouble speaking, facial drooping, one-sided weakness, new confusion, inability to walk, severe shortness of breath or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is also needed after a head injury or when dizziness is sudden and persistent. These signs can point to problems that IV fluids cannot address.
