What if ear wax removal does not relieve hearing loss?

Wax can block sound as it travels through the ear canal, but removing it does not correct every cause of reduced hearing. Fluid behind the eardrum, an ear infection, a damaged eardrum, age-related changes, prolonged loud-noise exposure or an inner-ear problem can also affect hearing. A blocked or muffled sensation can take a short time to settle if the canal is irritated after removal, but ongoing or worsening loss needs an examination.

A clinician may look for canal swelling, discharge or a change in the eardrum and may arrange a hearing test. Tell them whether one or both ears are affected, whether the change was sudden, and whether you also have pain, dizziness or ringing.

Book a review with a GP or ear clinician if hearing has not returned after the procedure or if the result is unclear. Take note of when the hearing changed and whether voices, phone calls or background sounds are difficult to follow. Keep water and objects out of the ear, and do not insert cotton buds or use additional drops unless a clinician recommends them.

Use the treatment instructions you were given and ask whether a formal hearing assessment is appropriate. If both ears were treated but only one remains affected, mention that difference because it can help guide the examination.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or for hearing loss with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, new weakness, confusion or trouble speaking. Get prompt assessment for increasing pain, fever, pus or blood from the ear, or marked swelling around it. Do not wait for another wax treatment to address these warning signs.
