What if the combined pill does not relieve irregular periods?

The combined pill often creates a predictable withdrawal bleed, but spotting or missed bleeding can occur, particularly after starting, changing, or missing pills. Vomiting, diarrhoea, or interactions with some medicines can also affect protection or bleeding patterns. Irregular periods may reflect pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid disease, stress, changes in weight, or another uterine or cervical issue. The bleeding pattern needs interpretation in context rather than assuming the pill has failed.

Take the pill according to its instructions and note missed tablets, new medicines, bleeding dates, flow, pain, and pregnancy symptoms. Follow the missed-pill advice for your specific product and use additional protection if that advice recommends it. Arrange a clinician review if the pattern continues, is troublesome, or began after a change. A pregnancy test, examination, or other tests may be considered based on your history.
