What if breast abscess drainage does not relieve breast pain?

The breast can remain tender after a procedure, especially around the drainage site. Ongoing pain may mean fluid or infected material remains, the abscess has returned, or the wound is inflamed. A blocked milk duct, mastitis, bruising, or a different breast condition can also cause pain. Examination may be paired with imaging or a sample when the findings are unclear. Persistent pain alone does not identify its cause.

Follow the wound-care instructions you were given and take prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Arrange follow-up if pain is not settling or if swelling, redness, warmth, or discharge returns. Do not press, puncture, or repeatedly massage a painful lump. If you are breastfeeding, ask how to continue feeding or expressing safely; abrupt changes can increase breast fullness. Note your temperature, pain pattern, and any change in the lump before review.

Seek urgent care for fever with worsening redness or swelling, rapidly increasing pain, pus or heavy bleeding, feeling faint or very unwell, or a new difficulty breathing. A clinician should also assess a persistent or enlarging lump, particularly when it does not behave like the treated abscess.

Ask whether the abscess has fully emptied, whether an infection test or imaging is needed, and how to care for the drainage site. Ask which pain relief is suitable, when follow-up should occur, and whether breastfeeding or expressing needs temporary adjustment.
