What if antibiotic treatment does not relieve fever?

Fever can occur with viral illness, bacterial infection, inflammation, medication reactions, and other conditions. Antibiotics do not treat every cause, and a fever may continue while the body responds to an infection. The original diagnosis may also need reconsideration, particularly if new symptoms appear. A clinician may check your temperature pattern, breathing, hydration, pain, rash, and other symptoms, then decide whether examination or testing is needed. Do not start a different antibiotic or use someone else’s medicine.

Take the prescribed antibiotic according to the label and contact the prescriber if fever persists, returns, or is accompanied by worsening symptoms. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and wear light clothing in a comfortable room. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which fever medicine is safe for you; check ingredients to avoid taking duplicate products. Keep a record of temperature readings, medicine times, and new symptoms to share during the review. People who are pregnant, very young, older, or immunocompromised should seek advice early.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck with severe headache, or a rapidly spreading rash. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, become unusually drowsy, or deteriorate quickly. A fever with severe localised pain or marked weakness should not wait for routine follow-up.
