What happens if trigger finger is not treated?

Trigger finger occurs when a flexor tendon does not glide smoothly through its surrounding pulley. Repeated irritation can cause tenderness at the base of the finger, swelling and a clicking or catching sensation. The finger may lock while bent and need the other hand to straighten it. Avoiding use because of pain can reduce comfortable movement and make gripping, writing or handling small objects harder. A finger held bent for long periods may become stiffer.

Book an assessment when locking is recurring, painful or limiting hand use. Seek prompt care if the finger becomes stuck and cannot be gently straightened, or if there is severe swelling, redness, warmth, fever, a wound or sudden loss of hand function. Arrange routine review for repeated locking, worsening pain or stiffness. A locked finger can have causes other than trigger finger, particularly after an injury.

Ask whether the tendon pulley is causing the catching, how long to try a splint, which movements are safe, and when an injection or release procedure should be considered. Ask how hand motion will be protected during recovery.
