What happens if squamous cell carcinoma is not treated?

Squamous cell carcinoma is a skin cancer arising from abnormal squamous cells. It may appear as a rough, scaly or crusted growth, a firm bump, or a sore that does not heal. Continued growth can cause bleeding, tenderness, ulceration and destruction of nearby structures. The chance of difficult local disease is greater when a lesion is neglected, deep, recurrent or located near important structures. Spread beyond the skin is possible, although the outlook depends on the tumour and the person.

Arrange a prompt dermatology assessment for a changing growth or non-healing sore. Diagnosis usually requires examination and may require a skin biopsy. If cancer is confirmed, treatment is selected according to its size, depth, site and borders. Options can include surgical excision, Mohs surgery or another form of skin cancer surgery. Do not pick a crust or apply unprescribed destructive products.

Seek prompt care if a lesion bleeds repeatedly, grows quickly, becomes painful, forms an ulcer, or affects movement, vision or an opening such as the ear or nose. A sore that will not heal or a new skin ulcer deserves assessment even when it is small.

Ask whether a biopsy is needed, what the pathology shows, how deep the lesion is, which procedure offers clear margins, and how the treated area will be monitored.
