What happens if scalp ringworm is not treated?

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, affects the skin and hair follicles. Ongoing fungal activity may leave itchy, flaky areas and weak hair shafts that snap close to the scalp. This can create bald patches or more general hair loss. A swollen, tender area with pus or crusting may be a more intense inflammatory reaction. Severe inflammation can injure follicles and lead to scarring, where hair may not regrow. The infection can also pass to close contacts through shared combs, hats, towels or pillowcases.

Arrange a medical assessment rather than relying on ordinary anti-dandruff products alone. Treatment commonly combines an oral antifungal medicine, which reaches infected follicles, with a medicated shampoo that helps reduce spores on the scalp and hair. Do not share hair tools, headwear or towels while infection is being assessed, and wash items that touch the scalp. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis because several scalp conditions can resemble ringworm.

Seek prompt care for a painful, boggy swelling, pus, fever, rapidly expanding rash or sudden increase in hair loss. Urgent assessment is also sensible when a child has scalp scaling with broken hairs or bald patches, because untreated infection can affect the hair follicles and spread within a household.

Ask whether the scalp needs testing, whether oral antifungal treatment is needed, how long to use the medicated shampoo, and which household items should be cleaned or kept separate.
