What happens if pneumonia is not treated?

Pneumonia inflames the air sacs in the lungs and may fill them with fluid or pus, making oxygen movement more difficult. Cough, fever, chills, phlegm, chest discomfort, and shortness of breath can intensify. The infection may spread beyond the lungs and trigger sepsis, or fluid may collect around the lung. Older adults, babies, people with chronic illness, and anyone with a weakened immune system may deteriorate quickly, but any person with worsening breathing needs prompt assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly for suspected pneumonia, especially with fever and breathlessness or a cough producing phlegm. Assessment may include listening to the chest, checking oxygen levels, and a chest X-ray. Treatment depends on the cause and severity; antibiotic treatment is used for some bacterial infections, not every cough or lung infection. Rest, fluids when safe, and taking prescribed treatment as directed support recovery. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or coughing up more than a small amount of blood. Seek urgent medical care for worsening fever, chest pain, dehydration, or symptoms that are not improving.
