What happens if myelodysplastic syndromes is not treated?

Myelodysplastic syndromes affect the bone marrow’s ability to make mature, healthy blood cells. Low red-cell counts can cause Persistent Fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or breathlessness. Low platelets can contribute to Easy Bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that takes longer to stop.

Low white-cell counts can make infections more likely or harder to control. The course varies between people: some need regular monitoring, while others develop worsening marrow failure or Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Blood counts and marrow findings help guide this assessment.

Book a haematology review and bring recent blood results, medicines, and a record of fevers, infections, bruising, bleeding, and energy levels. Ask how often counts should be checked and what changes should trigger a call.

Care may include observation, Blood Transfusion Support, Growth Factor Support, medicines, or Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant for selected people. Suitability depends on the MDS pattern, health, donor options, and personal goals.

Seek urgent medical help for fever, chills, severe weakness, chest pain, breathlessness at rest, uncontrolled bleeding, black stools, or a sudden severe headache. Do not wait for a routine blood-count appointment when these symptoms occur.
